SUMMARY:History Seminar -- Moczar`s “Partisans”: Nationalism\, Anti-Semitism\, Historical Myths
DESCRIPTION:25 February 2026\nProf. Paweł Machcewicz\, (Institute of Political Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences\, Warsaw)\nMoczar`s “Partisans”: Nationalism\, Anti-Semitism\, Historical Myths\n \n“The Partisans” were in the 1960s a very influential political group within the communist party and state apparatus in Poland. Led by Mieczysław Moczar\, the minister of interior and leader of the veterans` associations (during the WW II he was a famous commander of the communist resistance)\, they founded a dynamic political movement which strongly influenced not only politics\, but also mass-media and culture. Their ideology based on nationalism\, anti-Semitism and exploitation of Polish history – especially its non-communist aspects which helped attract followers from outside the ruling party. “The Partisans” undertook the most far-reaching attempt to shape the Polish model of national communism and were often compared by contemporary observers and analysts with parallel developments in Romania. \n\nPaweł Machcewicz is a historian\, professor at the Institute of Political Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw. From 2008 to 2017\, he was the founding director of the Museum of the Second World War in Gdańsk. He has taught at the Warsaw University and the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń and was director of research and education at the Institute of National Remembrance in 2000-2006. \n\nHis main areas of research are the Second World War\, the Cold War and communist regimes in East-Central Europe. His many books include: Rebellious Satellite. Poland 1956 (Woodrow Wilson Center-Stanford University Press\, Washington DC-Stanford\, 2009); Poland`s War on Radio Free Europe 1950-1989 (Woodrow Wilson Center-Stanford University Press\, Washington DC-Stanford\, 2014); The War That Never Ends. SUMMARY:Polish refugees in East Africa: a story of hope and human solidarity
DESCRIPTION:Polish refugees in East Africa: a story of hope and human solidarity\nProfessor Rafał Pankowski – Lecture\, 17 October\, 5pm. PUNO Lecture theatre (this is an in-person event).  \nPart of the Twentieth Century Polish History Seminar. \nThe history of Polish refugees in World War II is a story of multiple\, overlapping displacements\, shaped by shifting alliances\, imperial infrastructures\, and humanitarian responses. One of the most remarkable\, yet less widely known\, chapters of Polish wartime displacement unfolded in Africa. Between 1942 and 1952\, more than 18\,000 Polish refugees – mostly women and children evacuated from the USSR – were resettled in British colonies in East and Central Africa\, including two sites in Uganda (Nyabyeya and Koja). The challenges included tropical diseases\, isolation\, and cultural dislocation. The historical episode provides a crucial lens for understanding both the structural challenges and transformative possibilities of refugee reception. The refugee experience (exile) is a shared human condition: today’s hosts may be tomorrow’s displaced. By centering this relational understanding\, the historical narrative encourages solidarity with refugees both in Europe and globally by drawing on the shared history of displacement. \nProfessor Rafał Pankowski is a sociologist of culture and political scientist\, Professor at Collegium Civitas in Warsaw\, Poland\, a Rotary Peace Fellow at Makerere University (Kampala\, Uganda). He is a co-founder of the ‘Never Again’ Association. Author of ‘The Populist Radical Right in Poland’ (Routledge 2010)\, among other publications.

SUMMARY:Symposium - Mental Health
DESCRIPTION:Polish University Abroad\, Faculty of Social Sciences: \nThe Department of Health Sciences and the Department of Applied Psychology \n\ninvite you to participate in the Scientific Symposium:\nMental Health in the Age of Artificial Intelligence—Challenges and Prospects\nThe main theme of the symposium will be the impact of AI-based technologies on human mental health. \n  \nThe symposium will take place online on 15 November 2026. online. \n  \nThe symposium aims to bring together representatives of various academic disciplines to exchange knowledge\, experiences\, and ideas concerning the psychological and social consequences of the widespread use of AI tools in everyday digital environments\, the protection of mental health in the digital age\, the role of AI tools in psychological assessment and therapy\, and the ethical issues associated with the use of AI technologies in education and psychological practice. \n  \nWe invite educators\, psychologists\, therapists\, sociologists\, social workers\, physicians\, teachers\, and representatives of other academic disciplines interested in mental health issues to participate in the symposium. \n  \nPanel 1: Psychological Consequences of Interactions with AI \nArtificial intelligence has become part of our everyday lives. Algorithms determine the content to which we are exposed\, creating information bubbles. Deliberate disinformation and deepfakes increasingly lead us to question the reliability of the information we receive. The automation of cyberbullying has enabled its spread on an unprecedented scale. \nPanel 2: Protecting Mental Health in the Digital Reality \nThe widespread use of AI may pose risks to mental health\, but it may also provide tools for its protection. AI-powered tools can help detect mental health crises at an early stage and offer support in everyday challenges through chatbots and virtual therapists. These tools may also influence users’ sense of control and autonomy. AI-based technologies can additionally be used in health-related scientific research. \nPanel 3: AI Tools in Psychological Assessment and Therapy \nModern technologies create numerous opportunities for psychological assessment and therapy. AI tools enable the identification of difficulties within the context of daily activities\, the personalization of support\, and the monitoring of progress. Applications and interactive systems may complement\, and in some cases replace\, traditional forms of therapy. At the same time\, their use presents limitations related to usability\, trust\, and the ways therapeutic relationships are established and maintained. \nPanel 4: Ethical Issues in the Use of AI Tools in Education and Psychological Practice\nThe implementation of AI in psychological assessment and therapeutic interventions raises a range of ethical dilemmas. These include data security and the development of therapeutic relationships. The mere existence of AI tools designed to support both professionals and users does not guarantee their safe use. Knowledge\, experience\, and an understanding of the principles of ethical AI use are essential. One of the key challenges of our time is finding the right balance between innovation and responsibility. \n  \nRegistration \nhttps://forms.cloud.microsoft/pages/responsepage.aspx?id=oBYSjVyf6k6CqyjdZKXvzaPO3bYmxsBCrkwlQme0NkFUQjlKMFpZV1lOQVlZSEFWTDlEUzBUMUxaTi4u&route=shorturl
