NAWA

Language, Identity and Culture among Young People of Polish Heritage in the United Kingdom

Programme: NAWA “Promotion of the Polish Language”
Project number: BJP/PJP/2022/1/00008
Implementation period: 2022–2023
Project Leader: Institute of Literary Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences
Project Partner: Polish University Abroad in London (PUNO)
Coordinator of the activities implemented at PUNO: Dr Dorota Hrycak‑Krzyżanowska

The project was addressed to young people of Polish heritage in the United Kingdom, particularly learners aged 13–15 preparing for the GCSE Polish examination. It aimed to develop contemporary teaching materials that combine language development with reflection on Polish identity, culture and the experience of living between languages and cultures.

The project resulted in a printed and digital textbook comprising twelve thematic chapters, together with a methodological guide containing proposed lesson scenarios. The materials were supplemented with digital resources, including recordings, podcasts, literary and journalistic texts, photographs, interactive activities, quizzes and language games. They support the development of all key language skills: listening, reading, speaking and writing.

The project responded to needs identified among teachers and pupils in Polish complementary schools in the United Kingdom. The resources were consulted and evaluated with teachers and young people of Polish heritage. A central objective was to support the teaching of Polish as a heritage language while strengthening learners’ agency, sense of belonging and intercultural competence.
